REPORT

The New Hampshire Trappers Association held a monthly director’s meeting August 6th, 2013.

This year the annual NH Trapper’s Association fall rendezvous will be held in a one-day event on Saturday, September 21st, 2013 at the Owl Brook Hunter/Trapper Education Center in Holderness, NH. We hope you will stop by and enjoy the trapping demonstrations, dessert contest, country auctions, 10-gun raffle and mingle with experienced and novice trappers. There is a meal at noon and an association meeting at the end of the day.

NHTA received the Sly Fox Award from Fur Trappers of America for our donation and continued support. We also received thank-you letters from Fur Bearers Unlimited and the Sportsmen’s Alliance for our financial support.

NHTA awarded the first annual Ray Russell scholarship to Jake DeBow of Plymouth, NH. Jake’s essay was chosen from a competitive field of deserving college students. Jake is a junior at UNH pursuing a degree in Wildlife Conservation and Ecology.

The NHTA Awards committee now includes directors Steve Schlangen, Peter McLaughlin and Steve Bennett. There was also discussion about expanding the NH Fish and Game Liaison position into a committee. Director Dwight Pennell, vice president Larry Torr and secretary Roger Burnham will join Fred Shepard in maintaining ties and contact with the NH Fish and Game Department.

Looking ahead on our calendar we will be setting up a booth at the Farm and Forest Exposition in Manchester February 7th & 8th, 2014, and planning our next fundraising banquet and winter fur sale. Ahead of those events, we will be facing fur-trapping season! The fisher season in NH is the month of December and we at the association are seeking donations of fisher skins to meet our annual commitment to the Miss NH Pageant to provide a fisher coat to the newly crowned queen. We need thirty skins and we aim, each year, to fulfill that requirement through donations from member trappers, non-member trappers and other sportsmen. Thank you, in advance, for setting that extra trap or asking your hunting buddies to consider bringing in a fisher.

The following individuals donated a fisher skin (or carcass) from the 2012-2013 season: Roger Burnham, Craig Williams, Paul DeBow, Dan Teaque (2), Steve Schlangen, Ron Columbe, Ruben Parker, Don LeFlam (2), Jamie Cornucau, Bill Bailey, David Comeau, Larry Meyer, Dan Dockham, Dwight Pennell, Russ Ward, Todd Ewens and Paul Phelps. For our educational fur kits, we had donations of two coyotes from Dick Laflur and two weasels from Bill Anderson. Thank you all so very much.

The directors discussed at great lengths the need for new bodies in the association. Please check around amongst your sportsmen/sportswomen friends and invite them along to our 7 pm meetings held on the first Tuesday of each month (except Nov.) in Boscawen. And touch base with some of those directors we haven’t seen in a while. We miss them!

Best to all. — Paul DeBow, Grafton County Director
