ASSOCIATION REPORT
The NHTA officers and directors met March 2nd, April 6th and May 25, 2010 for monthly director’s meeting. The May meeting was held at the conclusion of the Spring Trapper’s Meet.
Furbearer biologist Pat Tate of the NH Fish and Game Department was in attendance to update us on the Keene-area bobcat study being conducted by the University of NH, and partially funded by NHF&G. Pat is pleased with the early results of the bobcat study. To date; there have been twelve bobcats collared (one female and eleven males). One of the collars on a male failed and is not transmitting a signal. The research team is reportedly looking at a second site in southern NH to expand the research area.
Director Steve Bennett briefed directors on the bottom line of the Banquet. We were all pleased with the turn out, the food, and the donations that were available through silent auctions and raffle drawings. After expenses, the association made $3,000. Thank you, Steve, for your countless hours of effort to make the Banquet a success.
The Alaska Trappers Association contacted the association for a donation for a fund-raising event. Directors agreed to send a NHTA 50th Anniversary belt buckle and a NHTA hat.
NHTA held its Spring Meet at the Belknap County Sportsman’s Club on Lilly Pond Road (11C) in Gilford, NH, Sunday, April 25th. Again this year we lucked out with the weather: a beautiful day to be outdoors. Attendance was light; it was nice to see a few new faces.
Thank you to the volunteer members that put on demonstrations: Roger Burnham, Bill Anderson and Dwight Pennell and Paul DeBow. A few helpful tips are always enlightening for the old and new trapper. And a thank you to those of you that brought meal contributions for the beans and hot dog lunch, and to Director Bonnie Pennell for the lion’s share of setting up and running the meal.
Preparations for the Fall Meeting have already begun.
President Larry Torr has purchased a piglet again for the roast to be held on Saturday. Roger Burnham or any director can be contacted for advertisement space in the Ad/Event schedule booklet.
Quarter page ads $25, half page $50, three quarter page $75 and full pages are $100. A $200 “sponsor” ad can be purchased which is an ad that will fill a page and is put on the NHTA website for a full year.
The Owl Brook Hunter/Trapper Education center in Holderness, NH, is tentatively on the agenda as the location for the event but we are always interested in suggestions for alternative sites.
If you know of another location that would suit our needs and is somewhat centrally please contact the event committee chair Secretary Roger Burnham. Or, if you would like to volunteer or would like to put on a demonstration or have an idea of a demonstration that you would like to see, contact Roger at 603-744-3561. This two-day event is always the third weekend in September: this year the 17th and 18th. Mark your calendar early because we want to see you there.
Director Steve Schlangen will again coordinate the annual gun raffle. He has distributed tickets to directors for them to sell. You can find a director to buy one, or several, or if you want to contact Steve directly he can be reached at 603-895-0686. Last year these tickets did not all sell so let’s not forget to ask around. They make great birthday gifts!
Before we get to the fall we would like to get a volunteer crew together to organize the NHTA storage trailer. If anyone out there has a knack for solving storage problems we would like to organize a work day to sort through, inventory and consolidate items. Some sort of petition or shelving needs to be installed. Any ideas on a place or time contact Vice President Dwight Pennell at 603-539-7954.
The association is appreciative of all those that have donated skins for the Miss NH fur jacket project, fur kits and fund-raising sales. April 17th this year was the Wild NH Day at the NH Fish and Game Department. NHTA was asked by the department to participate. NHTA directors set up the trapper’s cabin for the event. This year the event was met with wet weather and cool conditions. Mike Kazak, Bonnie Pennell, Roger Burnham, Larry Torr and Bill Anderson braved the poor conditions for about half the annual turn out of 5,000 patrons.
