FUR MANAGER’S REPORT

I want to give another reminder of the upcoming fur sale in Fallon on Feb. 26, 27 and 28. Again, if the quantity of fur consigned is not adequate to have the sale on all three days, we will make the adjustment to just the weekend. Please give me a call early for reservations. Knowing the number of furs several weeks before the sale is very important to get the buyers here.

By the time you read this, I hope the ’cat market is starting to get established. No time in the last 30 years that I have been involved in the sale has the ’cat market shown no direction by the first of the year. So far this year, no large companies are willing to start it off as they don’t have any firm orders as yet. I have heard of a few ’cats being bought at a very low save level, however with the anticipated shorter harvest all over the West, I believe we will see an improvement in February.

As the Director from Nevada to the National Trappers Association, I would like to make an urgent request of all of you to help out our fellow trappers in Montana. As you probably have heard, the animal-right organization called “Footloose” has qualified a ballot initiative for this November to outlaw all trapping in Montana. It has been over a decade since the anti’s have attacked trappers at the ballot booth. Remember Arizona, California and Colorado all lost the foothold trap. This initiative would outlaw all trapping, not just the use of footholds. Remember, we could be next if the anti’s get a win in Montana. The only way for the Montana Trappers to win is if they have adequate money to fight it statewide. It takes huge amounts of money to adequately fight this. Our Association has already sent them $1,000 and I hope we can send them more.

I would like to ask all of you to skin out several good coyotes or foxes that you are just throwing away because of the low value this year and bring them to the sale and donate them to the Montana Cause. If we can get 200 coyotes at $10 each, we can get Montana another $2,000. In addition, please consider sending a donation to “Montanans for Effective Wildlife Management” P.O. Box 133, Gilford, MT, 59525.

Remember if the anti’s win in Montana, the bulls eye could be on us next.

— Jim Curran
