DISTRICT 4 REPORT
Director Larry Emswiler called the meeting to order with 10 members present. He read the minutes of the MD Fur Trappers Board of Directors conference call meeting of January 26, 2014, with 12 board members on the call. Members were reminded to contact Secretary Jaime Glenn, 9 Jeanna Lane, Falling Waters, WV 25419, 301-465-0197, with any changes to the Maryland Trappers website.
Members discussed some items from the Board of Directors meeting, including the need for another trailer. We talked some about an article in the Maryland Natural Resources magazine on porcupines in western Maryland and the increase in population. Hunters and trappers were reminded that porcupines are protected, Bob Fogle talked about trap coating of his traps and how well it works for him. Members had a fun time telling individual trapping misadventures, including getting caught in their own traps while setting them.
Suggested fur prices were discussed: $40 for red fox, $25 for coyote, $18 for raccoon, and $8 for muskrats. A fur sale will be held in Boonsboro, MD 21713, at Ron Leggett’s, 7308 Monroe Road, on March 22, 2014. For more information call 301-432-8480.
Ron Leggett donated dog-proof traps to District 4 to benefit the district. We decided to raffle them off at meetings. The first will be at the next meeting, March 11, 2014.
A motion was made to start our meetings at 7:00 p.m. instead of 8:00 p.m. The motion carried. The meeting adjourned for refreshments and more stories.

DISTRICT 8 REPORT
Dist 8 was saddened to hear of the death of Don Lawson. He was a founder of Maryland Fur Trappers and served as President and other positions. He served as Secretary for over ten years and wrote and mailed out a newsletter for ten years. His newsletters are now a part of our MFT history records. He was also part owner of Sleepy Creek Traps. He will be missed.
Most of our meeting centered on fur buyers and fur prices. I have been in touch with Zanders from New Jersey and they are coming to Molly’s Sporting Goods on Rr 213 near Kennedyville, Md on March 22nd on a fur buying trip. It is their first time buying in this area. We support their effort and wish them well.
None of us were too happy with the last scheduled sale with NAFA being delayed until September. At least we have now have an option.
We talked a little about the Outdoor Show at Golden Hill with its skinning championship events. None of us had attended this year.
Our muskrat season has been extended one week to March 22nd due to high number of days with excessive ice. That may help if the rats are not biting too hard by then.
Our March meeting will be our last for this season.
We had a good bit of talk on DPs and how each of us set them up and use them. Each person was different. But a lot of good ideas were exchanged.
The selling of wild meats was also discussed.
Roger told of meeting and making of a new friend from Delaware that has shown interest in possibly helping start a Delaware trapping organization. Dist 8 will do all we can to help and support any attempts they make.
Beretta Gun Works has decided to expand their business to Tennessee due to recent legislation in Maryland. I hope the Maryland officials learn from this. Probably not.
All attending member gave a run down on how their trapping season has gone. It is very interesting hearing the various stories that come out at each meeting. Our exchange of information is also a great reason for attending the meeting.
Roger reported gaining a special permit for trapping beavers in Tuckahoe State Park. The last permit was issued in 2009. It was reinstated due to the huge amount of flooding and damage done while the beavers were protected. Complaints were made at the Park due to the beavers being aggressive with the boaters.
