PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello fellow NC trappers, I hope this report finds you doing well. I have just returned from our annual convention and have much news for you. If you missed the convention, you missed a heck of show. There were 2 days of demos, contests, a ton of vendors selling all sorts of trapping supplies, and great fellowship.
The weather was as near to perfect as you could ask for and we had a turn out that rivaled last years. Our Friday night cookout was awesome. Todd Creech, Leary Sink, Council Burney, Kevin Myers and David Denton worked very hard as did our ladies auxiliary and put on one heck of a feed. The vendors all reported brisk sales despite the rocky condition of our fur market. I want to thank all of our vendors for making the trip as they are one of our biggest draws. I want to give special thanks to Scott Painter of Blue Ridge outdoor supplies for his outstanding help and support of our organization. He has gone above and beyond every time we have asked him for help and is truly a part of our family. I would ask you all to support him as does our organization.
At our general membership meeting, I talked about a rule change that we have been working on with the NCWRC concerning CITIES tags. We had a meeting with colonel Jon Evans , who is the new head of enforcement, and discussed the time limit on purchasing tags for otters and bobcat. Right now, you have until the 10th of March to purchase and receive these tags. We have proposed that the NCWRC give trappers until the 31st of March to possess these tags citing the fact that most trappers spend the month of March putting up fur. Our wildlife biologist, Colleen Olfenbuttel, tells me that this change has all but passed the review process and will most likely be on the agenda at your public hearings in January. Please try to attend these meetings and support this change.
Our education director, Todd Menke, gave his report on our trappers education workshops and talked about our three day Advanced Trappers course which had to be canceled because we did not have enough people sign up. We have to meet our minimum enrollment to put this school on so please plan to attend and try to recruit another trapper to attend as well. All the information for this course and others is available on our website and the NCWRC website.
Our membership secretary, Dan Hunt, gave his report on the state of our membership. We are making slow but steady progress in growing our membership but we have a long ways to go. We need your help. Please get involved. Seek out trappers in your area and ask them to join the NCTA. Contact your district directors and talk to them about organizing and working with other trappers in your area. Our strength is in our numbers.
This convention will always be special to me because I had the honor of inducting David and Sharon Underwood into the NCTA Hall of Fame. These two have served this association for decades as our general Organizer and secretary and are truly part of it’s backbone. The whole underwood family has always been a big part of our organization and they are a class act.
To fill these positions, we were truly fortunate to have a couple of very qualified individuals who were waiting to be put the work. David Denton is now our General Organizer. David has been involved with our association for years and along with Todd Menke, is responsible for developing our trapper’s education program with the NCWRC and a big part of it’s success.
The secretary’s position has been filled by miss Cory Gilcrest . She brings incredible enthusiasm and organizational skills to this job. I look forward to the future and the things that we will accomplish with these two new additions to our BOD.
Our next BOD meeting will be November 2nd and I will report back to you and keep you updated. I will close for now but please keep in mind the things that I have said.
