REPORT
The New Hampshire Trappers Association held its annual fall meeting September 20th, 2014 at the Owl Brook Hunter/Trapper Education Center in Holderness, NH. This year the association again held the fall event in one day. As last year, the event was well attended and busy. Thank-you to the vendors that showed up to offer supplies: Bailey’s Trapping Supplies and Champney’s Trapping Supplies.
There were several demonstrations throughout the day. Vice president Larry Torr and director Bill Anderson demonstrated water sets for muskrat, treasurer Mike Kazak, fisher sets and director Dan Teaque otter trapping. President Jack Yazinski, director Gene Dabrowski and director Dwight Pennell demonstrated various canine sets. Director Paul DeBow covered trapping nuisance raccoons and demonstrated handling beaver: skinning, harvesting castor and rear legs for bait and stretching the skin on a steel hoop. Thanks to all.
A few other acknowledgements: Grafton County directors Dwight and Bonnie Pennell loaned the use of the meal tent and assisted with running several events from serving the meal and running the country auction. Professional auctioneer and NHTA member Jason Benware called the auction. Director Bill Anderson did very well soliciting auction items from trap and gear manufacturers and suppliers. Directors Kathy Denutte and Jim Petrin worked the event table selling tickets and memberships. Thank you guys. And, thank-you to Brian Denutte for spending the night baby-sitting the pig roaster and handling the carcass for the meal.
The dessert contest had plenty of entries this year and no shortage of judges available to pick out the top three. First place prize was won by Francis Burnham ($75), second was Dori Petrin ($50), and third went to Mrs. Coponen ($25). Congratulations and thanks for contributing!
The business meeting was held at the conclusion of the dinner hour. Jack Yazinski has agreed to serve a third term, as club president and Larry Torr will stay on as vice president. All other officers agreed as well to continue in their current positions. We had a few of our county directors step aside from their positions for now, although the association did welcome a new Hillsboro County Director: Anton Kaska.
The Trapper of the Year Award was awarded to Carroll County Director Bonnie Pennell. Bonnie was also this year’s inductee into the NHTA Hall of Fame. Congratulations Bonnie.
North American Fur Auctions local agent Dwight Pennell presented the association with a check to NHTA – a percentage of proceeds from sales of furs sold through the warehouse from NH trappers.
The gun raffle was held at the conclusion of the business meeting. The winners this year, in order of the drawn ticket and the gun they won: Chris Reed: Browning X-Bolt Hunter .270, Calvin Reed: Browning X-Bolt Hunter .30/06, Randy Stewart: Ruger M77 Hawkeye Compact .243 win., Gene Dabrowski: Remington Model 870 Express 12ga. w/wood stock, Larry Mickelboro: Savage 93 R17FXP .17HMR (Scope Pkg), Larry Torr: T/C Venture .300 WSM Black stock rifle (with 3×9 scope and sling), Rich Smith: Savage Axis .30-06 (camo w/scope), Pat McLaughlin: T/C .50 cal Triumph Camo Bone Collector, Jerry Bolduc: CVA Wolf 209×50 muzzleloader with 3×9 scope and Ervin Leonard got the Ruger K 10/22 Takedown .22 caliber rifle.
Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all of you that purchased and sold tickets. Those selling the most were awarded cash prizes this year. Reuben Parker sold the most (195) and received the first place award of $75, followed by Brian Denutte (102) winning the $50 second place award and Don Westcott (100) received $25. Thank you guys. And a large “thank-you” to Rockingham County director Steve Schlangen for coordinating the gun raffle, managing the tickets and purchasing the guns.
The next two events the association will be planning are the winter fur auction and the banquet. We are in need of volunteers to assist with the banquet and donations for the auctions. We look forward to hearing from you! Contact any director or President Jack Yazinski. The banquet is tentatively scheduled for the 21st of February 2015 at Alan’s Restaurant in Boscawen, NH. Tickets are likely to be around the $35 mark.
Also, a reminder that the association is eager to continue its commitment to the Miss NH Pageant program by presenting a fur jacket annually to each newly crowned Miss NH. This year NHTA directors voted to make the coat out of grey fox rather than fisher – although we will try to include a fisher pelt or two in the trim. Good luck trapping this year to all and keep the association in mind when setting an extra trap for a fur donation. We accept donated furs of any type for use in fund-raising and education.
Let’s hope the trapping conditions are favorable this fall and early winter!
