PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Well, it’s Pre-Fall and we have a million things to do in a short period of time as usual.
We just had our Annual Convention on August 23 – 24 which to me is still the “old rendezvous”. The convention is a great place to swap stories, trapping secrets and tips of the trade. Fur prices are up and so was the turnout.
Every year, on Friday evening of the convention, we have our Crab Feast with pit beef and ham, we also have a lot of sides and homemade desserts. We had the honor of Miss Maryland, Christina Denny, attend that evening and socialize with the attendees.
Many thanks to convention Chairman Tommy Tucker and all the hard working men and women who sacrifice a long weekend so everybody else can enjoy a great time. The “Trapping Legend” Ron Leggett entertained us by singing with the live band during the feast.
Saturday morning we started serving breakfast at 6 a.m. At 7 a.m. we all got together and loaded up our vehicles for the live trap line. About 55 people made a convoy as we went from farm to farm, showing different sets and prime locations. One of our junior trappers, Wilton Kennington, helped us set traps on Friday and caught a nice red in a Leggett dirt hold set. Thanks to Ron Leggett, Robert Colona and Brian Elder for their expertise in the field. You can really learn a lot on the live trap line.
We moved our way back to the convention grounds where we had trapping suppliers and tail gaiters selling trapping supplies, old traps, lures and taxidermist. Demonstrations start and last throughout the morning, Roy Stanley showed us coyote sets and John Mace of Mace’s Fur and Trapping Supplies did a great demonstration on dog proofs. NAFA’s Tom Tyree did a fantastic job on fur prepping and handling fur market and what the market wants and a lot of little tips we can do so our fur will bring more. Robert Colona, gave a Power Point presentation on locations, all types of lure and lure placement. I learned so much at the demonstrations that I ought to pay tuition to somebody.
At Noon we had Charlie Byreds grilled chicken dinners. At 1:30 we had our live auction. It was a great success thanks to all that donated items. Jamie Glen and Kate Web sold shirts, hoodie sweatshirts and tickets both days. I don’t know what we would have done without them. We had a 50/50 and a large money raffle before the Annual meeting.
The annual meeting started with President Butch Glen thanking everyone for all their hard work putting on the convention. Main topics: the FurBearers Unlimited banquet is on April 5th at Calvert County Fairgrounds in Prince Frederick, Maryland. Under membership, Reed Muse said we had a lot of people renewing memberships, a few new memberships and we had one new life member. His name is Norman G. Fraley.
Our historian, Roger Ringhold, had the books on display to review. We also had a 1973 entry for the books. We are submitting some changes to DNR on bag limits and dates for the 2014-2015 seasons.
Then we went into awards. FurBearers Unlimited gave commitment and recognition plaques to Billy and Melinda Rice, Tommy and Mary Tucker, and Dan Baker for their help with the 2013 FurBearers Unlimited banquet. MFTI awards were:

Congratulations to everyone that received an award. They were all well deserved.
President Butch Glen advised us before the elections started that he would not be running for a second term. Butch did an outstanding job as President and will automatically be put on the Board of Directors for a two year term. After elections were over, the officers are:

Board of Directors – Ron Leggett, Tommy Tucker, Butch Glenn.
After the elections, the meeting was adjourned.
A short Board meeting was held following the Annual meeting.
As your new President, I would like to thank Past President Butch Glenn for a great job and dedication to the MFTI. Maryland is very lucky in the great number of leaders we have that share their knowledge and time with us. They unselfishly show us tricks of the trade and secrets in their demonstrations and will answer any question we may have. They are a vital asset and resource to us. As members, we all need to step up and do our part to keep the MFTI going. Try to get younger members involved in trapping and older ones to help out at events and teaching. DISTRICT 8 REPORT
The Maryland Convention was once again a great time for all. Big thanks go out to convention chairpersons Tommy and Mary Tucker and to all other who helped at the various duties. I got to visit with quite a few friends. I believe everyone was pleased with their visit to our convention. A few friends were missing and a few new friends were gained. And so it goes.
Congratulation go out to our new Maryland State president, Danny Baker. We all look forward to working with you for the following two years.
District 8 will resume meeting in October. We meet the fourth Tuesday during trapping season at the home of Robert Calloway at 7:00 PM His address is 14313 Cherry Lane, near Tuckahoe State Park, between Centreville, Md and Ridgely, Md. Call bob at 410-634-1501 for further directions.
