DISTRICT 4 REPORT
Director Larry Emswiler called the meeting to order. There were 10 members present, including Ron and Betty Leggett. We discussed the upcoming fur sale at Ron and Betty Leggett’s on March 22, 2014, with appointments on Friday, March 21, 2104.
The proposed hunting and trapping regulation changes were discussed. District 4 is in favor of ending all hunting and trapping of fox during the first week of January. Fox have started to rub their fur and the fur is very poor this late in the season.
Larry stated that Don Lawson had passed away February 21, 2014, and he and Ron and Betty and Roy and Joan Stanley attended a memorial service for Don and his wife Pat, who had passed away 14 years earlier. Ron and Roy both spoke at the service.
Members talked about numerous trapping experiences with both nuisance and fur trapping.
The meeting was adjourned for refreshments at which time more trapping stories were told.
Meetings are held the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at Grace Trinity Church, 9501 Baltimore Road, Frederick, MD — Dan Tucker
DISTRICT 8 REPORT
Our last meeting for the season was a good one. Attendance was down, but enthusiasm was up. Our first meeting for next trapping season will be in October. Still to be held at the home of Bob and Verna Calloway. The October meeting will be an election meeting for Director, Assistant Director and Treasurer.
Fur prices and fur buyers dominated our discussion. Zander’s from New Jersey made their buying trip to Molly’s at Kennedyville, Md. All went well. They expressed a desire to buy fur in the Cambridge, Md area next year.
I mentioned in an earlier column that Wm Byler from Delaware would not be buying fur next year. That does not now seem to be true. I understand he wants to add on to his fur buying barn and wants to continue buying. Dist 8 sure encourages him to stay in business. He is a big asset to the entire area.
We all compared season totals and the selling of wild meats. DP traps were again discussed. As always, our adventures along the trap line were told and compared.
Roger reported a feature article on deceased Maryland trapper Pete Leggett was published in the March 2014 issue of Fur Trapper Magazine and written by Gary Jebson. Good article and well deserved.
The dates for the Md. Convention, Aug. 22-23, and the combined Pa and Fur Takers Convention, at Wash., Pa. on June 19-21, were discussed. A couple of our members are anxious to attend their first conventions. They will be overwhelmed for sure.
Our Md web site was talked about. There is convention info such as date, directions, a list of venders and much more. Just go to marylandtrappers.com.
Scott Chambers, a trapper and fur buyer from Delaware was mentioned. Dist 8 and our State Association all encourage him to get the Delaware trappers organized and a State Association going. That has been needed for a long time.
Past member Andy Roberts was emailed and asked for a update on his trapping in his new home state. His answer came too late for our meeting. He announced the birth of Galen Roland Roberts-Diaz. He needed to stay close to home this year and only trapper his own property. He caught his first coyote and a grey fox. Way to go Andy.
Time for all to clean and repair traps for next year. Make a list of traps and parts needed to take with you to which ever conventions you choose to attend. Do business with the dealers that support our associations and save that postage money.
Look me up and make yourself known at out Md Convention in August. — Roger Ringgold, 410-634-2552, rogerringgold@ymail.com
I’m a 59 year old who would like to do some trapping part time on my days off from my full time job. I would be trapping fox, coon, muskrat and hopefully otter. I would like to know if there is someone that lives in my area that would buy the whole animal unskinned. I will not have the time to process the fur and still work my full time job. I will be retireing in a couple of years and would be able to work the fur. Thanks for your help. I live in the Pocomoke and Princess Anne area of the eastern shore.
