VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello Members and Friends,
As summer is to be winding down, although the temperature is not showing it yet, it is time to get on the road and start attending the youth fairs, education classes, conventions and any other activities that you may be able to educate a youth or an adult in the fur harvesting field. Most of the county fairs will be over by the time you read this, but if not, take some literature and go out and visit with the people. You may be surprised of how much interest you will get, and may even retain permission on some new areas to do some fur harvesting. Representing your association in an ethical and professional way can be very beneficial to all.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the State Rendezvous. It will be held at the Osborne County Fairgrounds in Osborne on Oct. 1-2-3. Many demos will be presented on Friday and Saturday. Have received word from many dealers that will also be on hand to take care of your needs on supplies. — Roger D. Macy
NTA DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The Kansas Fur Harvesters lost a long time member and veteran trapper, May 5, 2010.
Earl Asbury, 88, of Latham, Kansas passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at his home.
Earl’s love of trapping began at a very early age and continued throughout his life. He was also a root-digger. He was a proud member of the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association. In particular, He loved the education of young trappers.
A memorial has been established in Earl’s name for the Kansas Fur Harvesters Association. The memorial is in honor of that love of trapping and young people. Through the education of the youth they to may become stewards of the land and lover’s of nature as Earl was.
Born on January 3, 1922 in Winfield, KS. He was the son of Ralph and Edith (Barnhart) Asbury. He received his education at Prairie Flower School. He began trapping at an early age, helping out on the family farm.
Earl was united in marriage to Aileen Cousins on April 13, 1941 in Peru, KS. The couple made their first home near Cedar Vale, KS. In 1943, they moved south of Winfield and in 1950 they moved to Latham, KS.
Earl was a longtime farmer and cattle rancher, retiring in 2009. He was a member of the Latham Christian Church, KFHA, NTA and had served on the Atlanta Coop board and Harvey Township board. He won several conservation and farm awards for grassland management. He has also won Sportsman of the Year award. He enjoyed hunting, trapping, root-digging and country music.
Survivors include: His wife – Aileen of the home; his son – Jim and wife Eva; his daughter – Nancy Everett and husband John; his sisters Florella Hankins, Ruth Barger Steven and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
