PRESIDENT’S REPORT
It is hard to believe that another year has come to an end. 2010 was a good year for the trapping community at the national and state level. For example, the recent ruling at the appellate level upheld the lower court’s ruling in the Maine case. The outcome in this case is the direct result of the efforts of the National Trappers Association, The Maine trappers Association and the other sporting organizations that the NTA has developed an alliance with. On the state level, we successfully completed four Cooperative Trapper Education programs and for the second consecutive year introduced legislation to change the trap tagging requirements. Even though we could not get it passed on the Alabama Senate side of the house the House side passed it the last two years. With a newly elected group of legislatures we plan on introducing the legislation in the 2011 session of the Alabama Legislature.
About the time you are reading this article, the first Cooperative Trapper Education program will have been completed at Swan Creek WMA. We still need volunteers for the three remaining classes scheduled for January 7-9, 2011, Greensboro, AL; January 21-23, 2011, Coosa County, AL; and February 18-20,2011, Greenville, AL. If you cannot attend for the entire weekend, please volunteer for Saturday or Sunday. I guarantee you will come away from the event with more than you gave. Give Mike Sievering a call at 205-339-7516 and volunteer.
Mark your calendar, the Spring ATPCA Meeting is scheduled for is scheduled for March 26, 2011 at Steve Phillips house. NAFA will be picking up fur. More details in future articles.
When you receive your renewal notice for T&PC, please mail the two copies of the renewal notice along with your money to Vickie Sievering , 291 Elm School House Road, Brent, AL 35034-2628, as soon as you receive it. If you procrastinate, you could miss an issue of T&PC. Your renewal notice could say to return it to Bob Crane, please disregard this statement and send it to Vickie to lessen the possibility of you missing an issue of T&PC.
In closing, Sylvia and I would like to wish you and yours a Happy Holiday Season and a Healthy and Prosperous 2011.
— Charlie Rath
NTA DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Just a friendly reminder the youth workshops are coming up. I’ve secured donations for 65 NTA jr. memberships for kids attending for the first time. This gift of a free membership introduces them to the NTA and they get a magazine 4 times through out the course of the year. Hopefully those who decide to continue trapping renew as they years go by.
Without recruitment we’re all doomed. Enjoyed seeing old friends at the fall convention in sept. and missed many face’s I normally see each year at this event. I know times are tough but id hope each of you make plans now to attend next years fall convention, without your support the association will not last. Hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
Here are the dates for this years Furbearer Workshops, if you know a kid who is interested in trapping sign him/her up for one of these in your area or if you would like to help a few kids learn how to trap sign up to be a mentor, we can always use the help, especially in southern Alabama.
Four trapper education workshops will be held in 2010-2011:
Decatur, Alabama — December 17,18 &,19, 2010
Greensboro, Alabama — January 7, 8 & 9, 2011
Coosa County, Alabama — January 21, 22 & 23, 2011
Greenville, Alabama — February 18, 19 & 20, 2011
