PRESIDENT’S REPORT
I would like to thank Kara Painter for doing a great job on the VTA Newsletter. Kara can use our help by members submitting stories and most importantly getting new advertisers. Let’s all step up to help Kara out with these issues. Kara can be emailed at smaltowngrl@ymail.com.
By the time you receive this issue of TPC our annual VTA Fursale will just be a few days away. It will be held March 8 at Expoland. We can definitely use volunteers to help for this event. I’ve heard so many things about the Fur Market; it’s anybody’s guess to how it will go. The fur sale procedures are listed on the VTA website at www.virginiatrappers.org. I hope to see you all there and I hope for good prices for the trappers.
The VTA membership is around 640 members right now. I encourage everyone to try and sign up new members to ensure the constant growth of the VTA. Diana Craig deserves big thanks for all she does for the VTA. The membership secretary job is very demanding and time consuming. Thanks again Diana for all you do.
It is time again for the VTA annual raffle, the prize once again is $ 500.00. Tickets are $ 5.00 each or 10 for $ 40.00. Last year’s winner was Bud Jenkins. The drawing will be held at the VTA annual convention July 12. Tickets will be available at the Fursale and anyone wishing to purchase or sell tickets please call Francis Richards at 540-840-5542.
Spring time is almost here and it’s a great time to plan some training events I encourage each district to have at least 1 Basic Class. The VTA is blessed with a lot of accomplished trappers that have the ability to be great teachers. Anyone interested please call Tony Daniel at 804-892-6139.
It’s VTA election time again. Winston Marshall will be chair of the nominating committee. Winston can be reached at 804-240-3490. The nominating process and time line were printed in the last VTA newsletter and can also be found on the VTA website.
The VTA annual convention will be held once again at Expoland in Fishersville, VA on July 11-13. Volunteers are needed for the gate, T-man dinners Friday and Saturday night, VTA merchandise booth, and table set-up and clean up. Please contact Jeffrey Hart at 804-556-6025. Anyone wanting a vendor spot please contact Francis Richards at 540-840-5542.
Hope you all had a blessed trapping season. Call anytime, 434-996-6067. — Steve Colvin
MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT
Dear VTA Members,
Boy, has it been cold! My hubby is out setting traps today. He has found a very nice young man named Mario to mentor into trapping. I am glad Dickie has someone to go along with him. He slipped on the ice yesterday and landed on his backside, so it a blessing to have a partner in trapping in this weather.
In my last report to the T&PC, I wrote that the VTA Fur Sale is March 9th, but it is Saturday, March 8th. I am sorry for the mistake, but I did get it corrected in time for the VTA Newsletter. I do have news to anyone interested in a discounted rate for a motel for the Fur Sale, March 8th and/or the VTA Convention, July 11, 12 & 13th at Expo, Fishersville. The Comfort Inn, Staunton, VA is offering a $70.00 plus tax rate for anyone needing a room for either event. Call 540-886-5000 and let them know you want the special rate for the VTA. This Comfort Inn has an exit next to it for I-81S and I-64E, which is one exit from Expo. Our VTA membership now totals 637.
We have had a good response from the letter sent out to all VA licensed trappers. I would like to remind all members to try and send me your renewals you receive from the T&PC as soon as possible. It takes at least two months to process your renewal, so if you send at the last minute, you will have an interruption in your magazines.
I spoke to a fellow trapper on the phone, who told me about his horrible accident 3 weeks ago. His pant’s leg caught on fire when he brushed next to a propane heater while skinning an animal in his barn. He said he was very lucky to have gotten his clothes off, but ended up with severe burns up his leg and buttocks and hand. He wanted trappers to know how important it is to be very careful in your trapping/skinning sheds. Wish this fellow a very good recovery!!!
Everyone stay warm and safe. — Diana Craig
