PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Hello fellow NC trappers, I hope that this report finds you doing well. The dog days of summer are upon us and with the heat and humidity, trapping season seems a long ways away. There is a ton of preseason work to do but the weather makes it difficult to stay motivated.
The fur sales this spring were a dismal disappointment to all involved and I have heard and read a lot of opinions on the drop in fur prices and what it will mean for us this coming season and beyond. We are in for challenging times for sure but this is nothing new. The fur market has always been a fickle beast and we as trappers are at the mercy of fashion whims and financial markets alike. All I can tell you is that I have trapped for the past 40 years and this next season will be no different.
On June 9th, Todd Menke, David Denton, Colleen Olfenbuttel and myself went WRC headquarters to have a meeting with Colonel Jon Evans, who is the new head of enforcement. The main purpose for this meeting was to talk about our education program and keeping it on track. Colonel Evans seems to be a fair man and easy to deal with. I look forward to working with him. We have a lot of work that is yet to be done and we need the NCWRC as our partner in these pursuits.
At our last BOD meeting, we worked on plans for the convention. We are trying to make Saturday, especially after lunch, a better day. In the past, we have always done well until after lunch and then things kind of fall apart. We are going to shift around the schedule in order to try to make things better and give you a good show. You will be receiving your newsletter shortly and the schedule will be included. I will also put it in my September report.
