PRESIDENT’S REPORT
The NH Trappers Association held a monthly director’s meeting June 3rd, 2014. Fred Shepard recapped the battle and the end result of NH Senate House Bill 1579. The state has set tougher penalties for death or injury of a pet by an illegally set trap. We survived another tough and lengthy battle to keep the use of steel traps legal in the Granite state. The association gave Fred a round of applause for his commitment and dedication.
Fred announced that he would be stepping down from the position of Fish and Game Liaison. President Jack Yazinski asked Ethan Yazinski and Dan Teague to work as our new Fish and Game contact team.
The NHTA Annual Fall meeting will be held this year again in a one-day event. Saturday September 20st, 2014 at the Owl Brook Hunter/Trapper Education Center in Holderness, NH. We have a tentative outline of events but are interested in adding demonstrations from experienced trappers on all topics related to trapping and handling fur. Please contact a director to volunteer. And we will be looking for donated items for our country auction. Thank you! The gun raffle tickets have been circulated to directors, so ask around to grab a few. There are only 1,500 tickets for sale for a chance at ten guns.
The directors have been discussing the fur jackets that we donate annually to the newly crowned Miss NH. We have struggled the last few years to gather enough donations of fisher hides to meet our goal. Directors Dwight and Bonnie Pennell were generous enough this year to buy the additional skins. We cannot, however, continue to make a jacket each year with so few donations. This year we are researching a gray fox stroller. Please keep the association in mind this fall when you make plans to trap. We are still on the fence so stay tuned. Thank you.
In addition to the nine fisher purchased by Dwight and Bonnie, the following individuals donated a fisher for the 2013 – 2014 fur jacket: Mike Kazak, Dwight Pennell, Paul DeBow, Dan Kokas (2), Bill Bailey, Jamie Corriveau, Ruben Parker, Craig Williams, Roger Burnham, Paul Phelps, Dave Comeau, Jack Yazinski and Dan Dockham. “Thank you” to all of you.
I hope you all find some time this summer to scout some new areas to trap and make some new landowner friends. Don’t blink; the days are already getting shorter! — Paul DeBow, Grafton County Director
