VICE PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Greetings trappers,
The dog days of summer. Have to admit it’s been a pleasant spring. Mild temps. No rain though, which is sorely needed. Have a hunch things will change here real quick. In the heat department anyway.
The anti trapping bill we have been dealing with, SB213, passed our legislature and our governor signed it into law. So we will be stuck with registration. Again. And the wildlife commission is directed to address the trap visitation issue around congested areas, meaning Reno and Las Vegas. There is more info on SB213 on our website if you want to learn more about it.
As for registration, the regs are not in print yet so I would hold off doing anything until then. But I would anticipate having to get a registration number from NDOW and either stamping it into a trap or attaching it by a metal trap tag. I have done it both ways in the past. Stamping is harder to do but more permanent. Tags are a easier to attach and can be easily removed to sell the trap.
Things could have been much, much worse. Joel did one heck of a job lobbying on our behalf. Three of the four provisions of the bill were deleted or changed. We fought long and hard. There were several hearings where we went head to head with the antis. Trappers in Carson, Las Vegas, and Elko showed up and many spoke up before committees at different times. Our wildlife coalitions, north and south, got involved and were affective. I can’t imagine the number of meetings attended and phone calls made by Joel on this one bill.
All in all I think we did as well as possible facing what we did. Our battles are very similar to ones fought over bear hunting, firearms registration, and even ownership of exotic pets. Very similar arguments for and against.
On more pleasant topics, the National Trappers Association Western Rendezvous is in Blackfoot, ID on June 7, 8, and 9. And many of our members are going. And the NV Trappers Association is putting on another Trappers Education Day in Clark County at Prospect Springs Ranch in the Spring Mountains on Sept. 28. This program is oriented to youngsters and new trappers and has been getting bigger and better every year. Check the website for more info as we get closer to this date. It is a fun and educational program at a beautiful location and I hope you can make it.
Also somewhat related to trapping, the big game tag draw results just came out. I seem to do okay getting a tag for mule deer, except seldom get the unit of first choice. But I never have any luck on anything else. Oh well, trapping comes right along right after the hunts anyway, and it more than makes up for it in my book.
