PRESIDENT’S REPORT
As I sit down to write this letter I’m taking a break from getting gear ready for my trip up north for the November 1st water opener. I figure if I don’t get this newsletter done now, it just might not get done.
I was hoping to have information for you on the proposed rule changes but most will be decided at the November or December N.R.C meeting.
The summer picnic at the Lundborg Farm was a great event. Other than my truck breaking down on the way, it turned out to be a good day to chat about events and the upcoming season. I would like to thank Matt Johnson for bailing us out by helping us get to where we needed to be in order to fix my truck and get us on our way home. We owe you one!!
As for business that was discussed at the meeting:
• Chuck Turk noted that officers were writing tickets on certain roads and trails on federal land. New areas, where in the past, were open for vehicle traffic. A map of the off limit trails (not a very good map) is available at forest service offices.
• We also talked about maybe moving our convention to a different date and/or place. After doing some research, we have decided to keep it in Evart on the same weekend for at least next years’ event.
• We discussed the idea of making our Houghton Lake Auction (Feb. 2, 2013) bigger and better. Look for our ad in Trapper & Predator Caller! Some topics discussed and decided upon were:
o Open the event up to vendors. Have the option of purchasing a vendor booth at the auction.
o Skinning demos to go on throughout the day.
o Top Lot awards will be given out for buyers and sellers.
o DNR Wildlife will be there again to seal otter, bobcat, fisher & Marten.
o Contact Ed Kramer for lot numbers @ 231-898-4823
o ALL BUYERS WELCOME! If interested, contact Ed Kramer@ 231-898-4823
o Volunteers are needed for this event and we could use your help. Please call me @ 248-431-8712 if you are interested in helping at this event. Let’s not only make this auction “better” let’s make it “great’. We want to be known as having one of the best auctions of the year and we have the talent and people to do it!
• The December auction (December 22, 2012) will be a joint venture with MTPCA. It is their turn for food and concessions. For lot numbers at this auction, contact Ed Kramer @ 231-898-4823. We will also need volunteers for this event. Contact me @ 248-431-8712, if interested.
The summer conventions saw record attendance. With predicted strong fur prices this season, there should be more trappers in the field. It seems like I’m talking to “new” trappers every day while running my canine line. It’s a great time to be a trapper and if you get the opportunity, take someone you know or a kid on your trap line.
Good luck gentlemen (and Ladies). I hope this upcoming trapping season treat’s you well and I hope to see you at one of our fur auctions! If you have any questions or concerns about our organization, feel free to contact me anytime at 248-431-8712. — Trent Masterson
