PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It’s that time of year again! Trapping season is right around the corner, Nov. 8. Can’t wait!

I’ve been fortunate enough to have the time to get my gear prepared ahead of time. I make it a point to inspect all of my traps before the season starts, clean and dye those that need it and ensure that my identification tags are on every one of my traps. I do a lot of fishing throughout the summer months, reserving some of my trout and bluefish for my ’coon/otter sets. I occasionally do some offseason volunteer beaver trapping for the DEP and when I do, I save some of the beaver meat for my fisher and coyote sets. I have plenty this year! I’ve inventoried my gear and supplies in the early Fall then ordered what was necessary, especially the 11-gauge wire for my beaver sets, I always seem to run low toward the end of the season. My waders are ready and most of the repairs to the trapping shed have been done.

Most important of all is obtaining my yearly permission documents from the land I have been trapping on over the years. Some of them send me prepared letters that require a signature, copy of my trapping license and a Notary Public sign-off. The other parcels that aren’t businesses but private landowners, I have them sign my pre-printed permission cards. And, of course, obtain my State Land permit. With the increase of the fee, I won’t be taking as many as I have in the past. If you haven’t received a State Land permit in the mail and you are interested in this, contact Paul Rego at 860-675-8130 at the DEP’s Wildlife Division. Once you obtain a permit, the next year you will automatically receive the permit forms.

Best of luck to all of you on your traplines!

The CTA Executive Committee is working on the determination of a date for this year’s annual Fur Sale. Now that our beaver season has been extended to March 31, it’s evident that we have to hold the fur sale sometime after the second week of April. More to come on this!

The raffle is going very well, your support and action is greatly appreciated. This is the main function that supports the CTA general fund by maintaining a prudent reserve to ensure our strength in any future legislative battles. If you need additional tickets, please contact Ray Madore at 860-345-1070.

As a member of the CTA, please feel free to call me or any of the other CTA Officers for any questions or concerns.

Regards.

— Herb Sobanski Jr.

Trapping season is about to begin here in CT. I believe that everyone is in pretty high spirits, especially after our battle with Bill SB994 last season. I encourage everyone to take a kid trapping this year, or even help out a new trapper. You could open up someone to a lifetime of happiness running a trapline and it will keep our American heritage alive.

In closing, I would like to wish everyone good luck this year and have fun setting those footholds and bodygrippers!

Good Luck.

— Ray Madore
