PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hello Tennessee Free Trappers,

At the time of this writing, Fall Meet at Rock Island State Park has not been held. I will report to you on this event in this next issue of the Trapper & Predator Caller.

This 2008 to 2009 season, East Tennessee trappers will be able to utilize the snare. Remember, the snare must have your name tag on it just like any other trap. Although it is not required by TWRA regulations, it is recommended that a deer stop be used, even though you may have permission to trap on a landowners property. If you think a roaming dog may be in the area, please don’t set these snares where there is a risk of catching a domestic animal. Snare usage is a privilege that we fought hard to get passed. The snare has been in use in western and middle Tennessee for years with no complaints or ill effects. Let’s all use the snares wisely and not risk losing the use of this effective tool. Please refer to the 2008-2009 Hunting & Trapping Guide for exact regulations.

USDA UPDATE ON ORAL RABIES VACCINATION: The USDA has once again this year for 14 days starting Oct. 2 (weather permitting) been dropping oral vaccine laced baits along the Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia border. Tennessee counties targeted are as follows: Hamilton, Hamblen, Cocke, Monroe, Hancock, Jefferson, Polk, Hawkins, Unicoi, McMinn, Sevier, Carter, Bradley, Sullivan, Greene, Washington, Meigs.

For Questions about Oral Rabies Vaccination or bait you have found, call Wildlife Services toll free 1-866-487-3297.

You may want to take precautions once again this season while handling fur and attempting to handle questionable furbearers while trapping. — Mike Renfro
