SECRETARY’S REPORT

Well, here it is another day of below freezing out and I mean below freezing. The show “Life Below Zero” could be filmed here. Sounds like it is warmer in Alaska than it is here in the U.P. We have used more wood this year than we have ever used. In fact, so far we have used two years’ worth. It was a good thing that Penny split all that wood last year.

We had our annual dinner in February and it was a success a usual. Great food and great door prizes. There were enough door prizes donated that everyone came away with something. I want to thank everyone for attending and those of you who donated prizes so that it was another great time. The food was, as per usual, great.

Maybe some of this weather should be sent to China and Russia to keep the fur prices up. They are having a real warm winter so far and this is what drives the prices up or down.

There are petitions being sent around so that maybe we can counter the antis movement. This petition is so that we can have the DNR use scientific methods of determining the seasons and bag limits instead of politicians. Before you sign a petition make sure you read what you are signing. Several members have received them and are taking them around for signatures. The new hunting, fishing and trapping fees for Michigan started March 1st. You will notice a substantial increase in these fees and also an increase of off-road vehicle registration fees. Make sure get the proper registration for your vehicles.

We have 2 new lifetime members, Len Rodal and James Cross. I want to thank these guys for the confidence in our organization.

The Farmer’s Almanac says that it is supposed to be cold until April. This could mean a late break up and very little spring beaver trapping. Maybe we will go form winter to winter with nothing in between. It may take the better part of the summer months to thaw everything out.

I hope every one got good prices for their fur this past season. — Jim Neitling
