PRESIDENT’S REPORT

By the time you read this, trapping season will be in full swing. I haven’t seen this much interest in trapping in a long time. The fur prices are looking good and it should be a great year for trappers.

I would like to thank Frances Richards for all his hard work. We were able to obtain a list of last year’s trapping license purchasers. Art Foltz put together a nice letter about the VTA, about our events and encouraging them to join. Mike Fies got the list and had it mailed to us in labels, which was a great help. When I last talked to Frances, he had mailed approx. 1,600 letters. Frances prepared all the envelopes by himself, great job Frances. After talking with Diana Craig, we had already gotten over 40 new members.

I had a great time at the Dist. 1 convention in October. It was amazing to see the following these guys have down there and also how hard they work as a group. Thanks Dist. 1 for all you do and also for the hospitality you guys showed me. It was a pleasure to visit with all of you guys.

Also, please remember it is time to start making nominations. Winston will have more info on this in the upcoming newsletter.

Dennis Boswell has volunteered to be our Dist. 9 director. Dennis is new to this but he wants to help. Dennis has reached out to Dennis Smith for guidance and help. Thanks guys for stepping up to try and make a difference in your district, you can reach Dennis at 804-370-4300. I wish everyone a safe and successful trapping season. Call anytime, 434-996-6067. — Steve Colvin

MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY’S REPORT

Hello VTA Members, Today is October 24, 2013 and we will be getting our first freeze tonight. Hate to see my beautiful potted plants go for this year, but winter must come. I’ve heard many people say we are in for large snow amounts. Get ready for the trapping season! Frances Richards has been busy sending letters to all state licensed trappers in Virginia, inviting them to join the VTA. Art Foltz drafted the letter, and did a great job. It seems to be working! We have had a good response so far and I have been doing memberships daily. Steve Colvin attended the District 1 trapping event on October 12th and took in a dozen or more new memberships. Our membership was down to just over 500 before our Convention and now totals 560 today. Good work guys! Do not forget to submit your nominations for our 2014 VTA election to Winston Marshall at winston.marshall@nuisancewildlifeservicesllc.com or 804-240-3490. Everyone have a great winter and trapping season. — Diana Craig

DISTRICT 1 REPORT

For those of you that missed the Bland County convention this year, you really missed out on one of the best ones yet. This year with fur prices on the rise and with the word out, trappers are coming out of the wood work! We didn’t have a head count for the weekend but there was 89 at the dinner Friday night and around 100 at Matt Jones’ demo on Saturday. Our president, Steve Colvin made a trip down and signed up several new members, including a life time membership. I would like to thank everyone that came out and those that helped with the convention. There were several that stayed until Sunday to help clean up and I greatly appreciate that! Tom Tyree was there from NAFA and did a demo both days. He will be at the fur sale picking up fur for those of you who would like to ship your fur. You need to be there early because he usually leaves around noon. The fur sale will be at the livestock market in Wytheville on March 1st. We will be pre-registering 2 weeks before the sale. You can do so by calling me at 276-210-7105. We will have a 3% sale commission. By the time you read this, hopefully you have all your traps in the ground and the fur shed half full. I know you are busy trapping but don’t forget our monthly meeting the second Sunday each month. We meet at Shoney’s in Wytheville at 3pm. We need more members to show up to bring new ideas to our events. Till next month, keep safe. — Travis Bandy
