PUBLIC RELATION DIRECTOR’S REPORT
The 2009 fur sale was a good sale. As you can see by this year’s stats (below), the prices were down considerably, but better than some had feared due to the economy.
Kevin wants everyone that helped to know how much the officers (and other members) appreciate all the hard work they did. There were just too many to name individually, but you know who you are.
The donated fur/scholarship program did very well and by adding a little money from last year there is enough for two $1,000 scholarships. Ken and his family did a great job.
If you have a family member that qualifies for the scholarship, keep checking on the bottom of this page for updated applications and other information. I expect more info from Stacy Dew any time now.
It was decided to hold the summer campout up at the good old spot (can’t remember the name) up Fairview Canyon. Get yer shootin’ eye all tuned up. More info to come as plans get firmed up.
If any members know of a veteran or family of a veteran that needs some assistance or that can use some help, please contact one of the officers.
Nominations for officers were held at the Saturday, Feb. 14, 2009, membership meeting. Written nominations will be accepted for a short period if you couldn’t attend.

It was good to see Ol’ Paul Snyder from down Dixie way again. Looks like he has another generation of trappers coming up to get him going again. We sure didn’t get much time to harass Tony Martineau. He was in-n-out in a blink. For me at least, the best part of any UTA function is seeing old friends and making new ones.

FUR SALE REPORT
The fur sale that was held by the Utah Trappers Association was a success. With all of the gloom and doom that had been predicted fur sold really well and some at very nice prices. Bobcats proved to continue with their staying power with higher than anticipated prices. For the most part all of the fur sold. The exception being those that did not meet minimum bid requirements or early and poorly handled fur. Prices were lower than last year, but, if you consider that last year had record prices and we are currently in the middle of a worldwide recession, most fur moved quite well.
Coyotes were low as expected and beaver and raccoon were a disappointment. However, all sold even at reduced prices. Bobcats were a pleasant surprise as they averaged much higher than expected.
There was a lot of fur put on the sale. With 1,230 bobcats the buyers were very pleased. One buyer told me that the UTA sale had more fur in it than all of the sales he had been to combined this year. He also added that the UTA sale will set the price structure for the market for the upcoming year.
I want to thank all of those that helped with the sale. Without their help there would not even be a fur sale. I also want to thank all of you that called in with your catch. By doing so it really helps to get the buyers at the sale. If the buyers know what is there then they can work ahead of time to fill their orders. Bottom line is that if they know what to expect then you can expect a larger fur check.
We had a good turnout with buyers this year. Counting the buyers buying frozen fur for blankets and taxidermy, we had over 20 buyers. Those of you that sold carcass animals or frozen fur the buyers were extremely well pleased. You brought in good animals that will work for their mounts and blankets. I already have orders for more frozen fur and carcass animals. I think that it was a win win for both the sellers as well as buyers. The sellers got good prices for their carcass animals and the buyers got what they needed for their mounts and projects.
I would like to mention one trapper that brought in his beaver castor. Keith Mcclure brought in his castor and received over $100 for it. When I talked to him, he was very pleased with the amount he received. He figured that the castor is worth about the same as the pelts. Keith and his beaver castor was one of the highlights of the sale. Just goes to show us that a little extra work can add up to a nice fur check.
As I am writing this report, we are already planning next year’s fur sale. We hope to continue with the same and add to the sale whatever is needed to make it better and better. With your help and hard work I have little doubt that the UTA sale will only improve. As always please feel free to call with questions on the fur sale, frozen fur or with how you can help.
