Canada was largely founded and explored due to the trapping trade, but few professional trappers remain.
Only 455 Canadians listed hunting and trapping as their career in a survey conducted by Statistics Canada. It was the least common occupation in the country of 35 million people.
“It’s taken us so many thousands of years to gain these skills — what a shame if they are lost,” trapper Gordy Klassen told Bloomberg.com. “We may have elevated our standard of living because of oil and gas, but to think that we’ve lost these rhythms, it’s dangerous.”
The number of professional trappers and hunters in Canada was 1,200 in 2006 and 1,185 in 2001, according to Bloomberg.com.
