PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Lazy hot humid days of summer. My usual report in the summer starts off where I complain about the heat and wonder if it will ever cool off like we enjoy in the winter trapping season. This summer is like normal, just that the heat started a little earlier this year. Oh well, hopefully you folks have had a good summer around the lakes fishing, swimming or noodling.

As I reported in the last newsletter, we were successful in the request to change season dates of the general furbearer season. The general trapping/fur harvesting season will now be from Dec. 1 until Feb. 28. This change will sure simplify the trapping during the late season where we are targeting the bobcats and catching some of the big ridge running ’coons. We are now starting the next request to see if we can get the wildlife department to remove or raise the limit on raccoons. We sent a letter with that request. Now it needs to go through the process of review across the wildlife department.

The main people we need to convince are the other groups who have a stake in this issue: Delta Waterfowl, quail hunters, turkey hunters and deer hunters and our Wildlife Commissioners. The first three should be interested because of predation by ’coons on nesting birds. The last is where the deer hunters are tired of feeding ’coons at their feeders instead of deer and turkeys. We will get more information out as details become available.

We have a nice line up of demos scheduled at the Fall convention. We might even get the folks from NAFA there to give some skinning and stretching demos of our common furbearers. More on that in the next newsletter. Please contact other members to encourage them to come to the meeting at Okmulgee on Oct. 17. Also, please see the Web site for more current info at www.oktrapper.com.

Please remember to bring or send three (3) trap tags from every trapper in our association. We need to get these to Tom Peterson or myself and he is going to put them on a stretcher board for a fundraiser and a history board of our members. You can either mail them to Tom or myself or bring them to the fall meeting. It would be best to just drop them in an envelope and mail them so you don’t forget like I would.

One last note, please keep the family of Sam Griesel in your prayers as this fine trapper passed away at the age of 90 years last month. We are going to miss him.

Thanks and have a great August. See you soon.

— Shannon Sheffert
