EDUCATION COORDINATOR’S REPORT
We had a great turnout for the first advanced trapper education workshop held at the Eastern 4-H Education Center near Columbia on March 13, 14, and 15, 2009. If you talk to one of the 45 individuals who attended, I am sure you will receive some positive feedback. There were plenty of pictures taken and trapping stories shared. Some of the comments that I heard included:
“It was money very well spent.”
“Couldn’t have been made to feel more welcome.”
“Hats off to the volunteers for making this happen.”
“The workshop was a great success.”
“Great job guys. This class was awesome.”
“The people that missed out on this one missed a goodin.”
“The food and place was five star.”
“Got to see Prune skin a carolina silver sable.”
“Jimmy almost went swimming, but Ole Chiseltooth saved him from going into the drink.”
“Facility was top notch, food was great and a great bunch of folks to fellowship with.”
“Very organized and very informative.”
“Thanks to all the instructors for giving up their time to put this on/”
Even though we had to deal with rain all weekend, we still managed to catch a few animals. This would not have been possible without all the instructors who helped. Please give everyone a big thank you when you see them because everyone volunteered their time and expenses to make the workshop a great success. Before I list the instructors I will end with a final comment that I heard:
“As for the instructors, we had the best of the best.”
The following instructors took time out of their busy schedules and deserve credit for a job well done: Reid Cooper, John Deaton, David Denton, Dale Dixon, Marco Gibbs, Scott McNeely, Todd Menke, Colleen Olfenbuttel, Jimmy Pierce, Wayne Rose, Joey Smith, Rodney Stancil, Claude Taylor and Prune Windspear.
If you missed this one, make plans to attend our next advanced trapping workshop April 2, 3 and 4, 2010. We will be moving this one to the mountains since the last one was near the coast. We might even have some of those who attended this year return next year. Hurry and sign up because seats will be limited. Cost will be $300, which will include all the materials, training, meals and lodging. The facility and meals will be just as great as this year. The location will be at the NC Division of Forest Resources Mountain Training Facility at 6065 Linville Falls Highway near Crossnore, NC 28616. The trapping terrain will be different than some of you are used to so I know everyone will learn something new. Reservations require a $100 deposit. Full payment will be due no later than March 1, 2010. Refunds will be given if your plans change.
If you are not able to attend a three-day trapping workshop, we also offer day-long basic trapping classes. Check the NC Wildlife Resources Commission Web site at www.ncwildlife.org periodically for a class near you. Click on the Hunter Education Courses Register Now on the righthand side. In the upper right hand corner, click on Check For ADVANCED Courses!
Under the course type, you will want to look for Trapping for the locations and dates. We will be hosting a one-day class at the Alamance Wildlife Club at 584 Wildlife Club Road, Graham, NC 27253 on Saturday, July 11, 2009, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is no charge for this class and if you pass the test at the end of the day, you will receive your Trapper Education Certification and patch. If you want to attend, go to the Web site to sign-up and register or e-mail David Denton at D1HUNTERSAFETY@INTELIPORT.COM for more information.
