REPORT

The third Annual Banquet was held Feb. 21, 2009, at the Makris Lobster and Steak House in Concord, NH. Event organizer Steve Bennett and NTA directors were able to sell all 100 tickets this year. Thank you to all of the members and directors that volunteered time to help set up and organize the event. Thank you also to those businesses that donated items for the auction. Items were available through silent auctions, a short live auction and through various drawings. This event has grown each year so the association will be looking for a larger venue next year to accommodate more attendees as well as additional auction space. Thanks again to Steve Bennett for making this banquet a success. And the food was great.

Legislative Director Fred Shepard had been following legislation that was going to committee Feb. 17 at the State House. House Bill 559 sought to change the role of the NH Fish and Game Commission from its current position as a check against the executive director to one of advisory only. The bill also looked to change the criteria of those that could sit on the board — from the current requirements of a nominee being a licensed sportsmen and a member of a sportsmen’s club — to include any outdoor enthusiast AND a position on the board for a representative from an animal protectionist group. Ouch! Thanks to Fred and other directors for calling around and rounding up trappers and sportsmen to contact their representatives and thanks to those NHTA members that took the time on the 17th to attend the public session and hear testimony. Association Vice President Larry Torr spoke on behalf of the NHTA in opposition to this bill. Those attending the hearing in favor of the bill totaled less than ten individuals. Those attending in opposition: 130+. Word on the street was that this bill was likely to be killed in committee. Thanks again Fred for keeping an eye on this one.

The association set up a booth in Franklin again this year, March 14 and 15. The Franklin Sportsmen’s Show was held at the Franklin High School this year; hope you stopped and visited the directors who took time out of a weekend to man the booth.

April 18 is the date for this year’s Discover Wild NH Day at the NH Fish and Game Department Headquarters in Concord, NH. NHTA will have a display again this year. This event always proves to be great exposure for the association. Directors agreed to purchase an additional 500 Fur Takers Association wildlife fact cards for children to collect.

The spring meeting will be held Sunday, April 26, 2009, at the Belknap Sportsmen’s Club. The Club house is located on 11C, or Lily Pond Road, in Gilford. Lily Pond Road is the short road between routes 11b and 11 that goes by the airport. Doors will open at 7 a.m. A vendor will be available with coffee and doughnuts.

Best to all.
