ASSOCIATION REPORT
The New Hampshire Trappers Association held monthly meetings March 3 and April 26.
The April 26 meeting was held at the conclusion of the Spring Trappers Meet, held this year in Gilford at the Belknap Sportsmen’s Association. The Meet was not well attended, but the weather was great and the company friendly. Bill Bailey Trapping Supplies was on hand to offer supplies. The event went well with Directors Mike Kazak and Larry Torr putting on demonstrations. Thanks to those two and also thanks to Bonnie Pennell and Mary Ann for cooking the beans and hot dogs for lunch.
Fish and Game Liaison Fred Shepard informed us that Senate Bill 132, a bill that would have merged the NH Fish and Game Department with other state agencies, was met with overwhelming opposition and was likely to not come out of committee. At last word, the subcommittee had voted 8-0 in favor of killing the bill. NHTA President Dwight Pennell spoke at the Legislative Building in Concord on behalf of the association opposing this bill. Fred notified us that Senate Bill 124 had passed. This bill regulates beaver pipes, and removes the need for a wetlands permit to install beaver-pipe systems that regulate water flow. The state will allow up to three pipes 15 inches in diameter to be installed without the need for a permit.
Association President Dwight Pennell attended the NH Fish and Game’s “Discover Wild NH Day” along with Bonnie Pennell, Larry Torr and Roger Burnham, to represent NH trappers with the trapper’s cabin that was held Saturday April 18. The event was crowded and the NTA coloring books were cleaned out in record time. We are happy those are in the hands of young children.
The Sportsman’s Show in Franklin, NH, took place March 14th and 15th – hope you stopped by the NHTA’s booth. Thank you to the directors that worked the show and to Ethan Yazinski for coordinating the director’s schedule and setting up the display.
Dwight Pennell and Larry Torr will attend the Miss NH Pageant in May at Pinkerton Academy in Derry, NH. Following the crowning of the new Miss NH Dwight and Larry will present her with the fur coat that is donated each year by the Association. This coat is only possible through the generosity of individual trappers that donate a fisher in the fall of each year. Thank you to all that donated this year.
The Annual Fall Meeting will be held again this year at the NH Fish and Game Owl Brook Hunter/Trapper Education Center in Holderness on the third weekend in September. We hope you can look ahead and pencil it in.
Director Steve Schlangen has the ten-gun raffle tickets available. This drawing will be held at the fall meeting on Sunday afternoon. Contact a director to buy a ticket or two or call Steve directly, 603-895-0686, if you would like a handful to sell. They are $10 each and there will be no more than 1,500 offered.
