PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season’s Greetings,

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.

Don’t forget to mark Saturday, April 5, 2014 on your calendar for the Furbearers Unlimited and Maryland Fur Trappers Banquet. The event will be held again next year at the Calvert County Fairgrounds in Prince Frederick, Maryland. You can go to the Maryland Fur Trappers website, under events to get tickets and more information.

We are trying to get more trapper education classes in the state. Also, we are submitting changes to the laws in bag limits and seasons with the Department of Natural Resources.

If your trapping buddies are not members of the Maryland Fur Trappers, please try to encourage them to join. The more members we have, the stronger our voices will be heard.

Good luck on the trap line.

God bless you and your family in the coming year.

Sincerely. — Dan Baker III

DISTRICT 8 REPORT

Another great meeting. We were short on trappers, but we made up for it with great stories and adventures. Several members who could not make the meeting, made contact with us to let us know they wanted to attend but could not.

We welcomed Mark Sumeriski to our group. He did not have traps in the ground, but has high hopes for his coming time off.

Trapping is in and we talked fox trapping most of the evening. Several members of our group have hit the fox hard. We all trap a little different from each other and we discussed our various methods.

Our local fur buyer is paying top money NAFA has added a second fur pick up for our area and the local agent for them has a new address. It is looking like a banner year for all trappers.

Our December meeting is being held a week early, on the 17th due to Xmas. December is also our designated month for fur donation to Dist 8. It is voluntary and we will gladly accept a donation from anyone willing to help out.

Roger told of catching a man with a fresh killed fox just taken out of his trap. The man worked for the landowner and the matter was settled with the land owner.

Roger also reported having a terrible time on first day of fox trapping with his cable stakes ends bending and causing him to have replace them in the field. The wasted time was a killer.

All attending members reported having less trouble with mange this year. It sure is hard to toss those high dollar foxes.

Roger told of having several emails and phone calls from people looking for trapping info, fur buyers and available trappers to trap their land. One call was referred to Jamie and his story of the phone conversations with the “crazy lady” set us all in fits.

Dist 8 meets on the fourth Tuesday during trapping season at 7:00 PM at the home of Robert Calloway. His address is 14313 Cherry Lane, near Tuckahoe State Park, between Centreville, Md and Ridgely, Md. Call Bob at 410-634-2501 for further directions.
