DISTRICT 8 REPORT
On June 12th, Dist 8 once again worked the Maryland Junior Hunter Field Day in Sudlersville,Md. Barbara Joyce of the Md DNR did her usual fine job in putting the event together and coordinating. Working the event for Dist 8 was Don and Anita Moore and Roger Ringgold. The event introduced the young hunter to the various outdoor activities available to them in Maryland. They included Maryland Fur Trappers, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, National Wild Turkey Foundation, Md Dept of Natural Resources, Md Bowhunter’s Society, Ducks Unlimited and Sudlersville Skeet Club. About 50 young hunter attended and left well informed.
Dist 8 will resume meetings the fourth Tuesday in September at the home of Robert Calloway. This is an election year for Dist Director for Dist 8 and elections will be during the October meeting. We are looking for new energy in the form of new personel. Please plan to attend.
Maryland Fur Trappers will host their annual convention on Aug 20-21 at Fairplay, Md. For more info check out the Md web site at www.marylandtrappers.com. Please bring in your raffle chance money and a donation for the state auction. Look around you, there most likely is a junior or elderly trapper that would welcome a ride with you to the convention.

DISTRICT 12/13 REPORT
Not too much going on right now, at least trapping related. Our District did participate in the MD DNR Junior Hunter Field Day, held at the Izaac Walton League of Southern MD’s facility, near Waldorf. There were also two similiar events held in June on the Eastern Shore, and a fourth one is slated for Western MD in mid October. I am truly glad to see our DNR being pro-active, in regard to youth involvment and recruitment to the field sports. Far too many kids these days have no exposure to, or connection with, the activities we so love.
All it takes is someone to provide that first spark, and then help nurture it into a burning, lifelong passion.
These kids ARE our future! In addition to the MD DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service and the IWL, other cosponsers of this event included MD Fur Trappers, MD Wild Turkey Federation, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. The kids got to try their hand at both archery and sporting clays, learned about turkey restoration efforts and calling, waterfowl hunting and calling, elk habitat projects and hunting, and even had a retriever demonstration, among other activities. Every kid walked away with a duck call (my ears are STILL ringing) and there were door prizes awarded to all participants.
Marty, Tommy, and Cody manned our MD Fur Trappers display, and had the opportunity to inform and educate 90 kids, plus their parents, about the history of trapping, modern traps and trapping, and trapping’s important role in wildlife management. For many, it was their first exposure, but others, especially the parents, were familiar with trapping, and many shared their experiences. Thanks to all the volunteers who make these events happen, and to the parents, for taking the time to get their kids involved.
Enjoy the dog days of summer, as fall slowly and surely draws closer. And, as always, make it a point to take a child outdoors with you. Let’s get and keep them involved. District 12/13 will resume monthly meetings in October, on the 3rd Tuesday of every month, 6:30 pm at Marty Campbell’s home in Owings.
