EDITOR’S REPORT

Over 4500 wild fur pelts in 54 lots were sold to 13 area fur buyers at the ATA Fur Sale in Russellville last month. Otter and bobcat brought the highest prices at $65 and $85. Sale averages dry/green were Beaver $9.81/$4.98, Bobcat $40.11/$42.11, Coyote $10.16/$3.51, Fox-Grey $15.16/$15.66, Fox-Red $16.70/$15.00, Mink $10.69/$11.65, Muskrat $4.61/$4.51, Opossum $1.52/$0.63, Otter $45.23/$41.17 and Raccoon $6.06/$3.95. Two badgers ($10.75), fifteen nutria ($1.03), a black beaver ($13.00), a black coyote ($45.00) and a white opossum ($10.00) were also in attendance. Castor average was $25.95/lb and squirrel tails/hides averaged $0.16 and $0.19. Complete details by dry/green, low/high/average and totals are available at the ATA website.

A big thanks to auctioneer David Shipman and the volunteers who kept the show rolling. Gary, Wallace, Mike, Terry, Sterlen, Willard, Charlotte, Rocky and Betty sorted lot tickets, kept the sold fur moving to the buyers and processed the sold receipts.

The hardest workers were the young fellows who hauled the sold fur to the buyers tables. But come on guys, wheelbarrows? Back in the day, we picked the fur up with our teeth and crawled on all fours, lol. Just kidding, you guys and gals are the future of the ATA and make us all proud.

Also at the sale, four different vendors had trapping supplies and Blake Sasse with AGFC tagged bobcats and otter. Next year, even if you don’t have any fur to sell, support the ATA and come on down to the sale to pick up some supplies, renew your ATA membership, help haul the fur or just meet old and new friends.

Beaver, muskrat and nutria come to a close at the end of March and the ATA moves right along to the spring directors meeting on April 16th. Discussion topics will be districts and chapters, affiliations with other outdoors groups, the fall convention, fur sale results and more. If there is any business in particular that you would like to be discussed at the meeting, contact your chapter representative or an ATA director.

The ATA will be donating $250 to Furbearers Unlimited to buy rifles which will be auctioned off at National Trappers Association national and regional conventions. Speaking of NTA conventions, the 2012 NTA Southeast Regional Conference is in the planning stages to be held at Pope County Fairgrounds in Russellville around the second week of May 2012.

A note for renewing members with TPC subscriptions: The renewal form that TPC sends out come in three parts now. Please return the entire form, not just part of it. Sometimes we only receive one section and that one has to be sent back to TPC, leaving ATA without a copy of your renewal. Thanks!
