NTA DIRECTOR’S REPORT
Well another season has come to a close and I hope it was a successful one for all of you. I attended the fur sale over in MS. 2/26/11 and from the looks of things fur price’s are up quite a bit from the past year, especially our southern bobcats and grey fox. Hopefully prices will continue to go up for next season. It’s been a busy winter and I attended all four of the kid workshops and thanks to sponsors all the kids attending under age 15 got a free NTA membership.
I signed up 62 Jr. members as well 2 dad’s who wished to join for a year and had 3 renewals. Hopefully with the help of many trappers across the country I’ll be able to continue this recruitment program next year. We will be having five workshops all across the state next year with an increase in students per workshop as well since the popularity of this program is growing by leaps and bounds.
Thanks to all the many volunteers, trap Supply Company’s, and individuals who donate items, time or just money to keep these programs available. Mike Sievering and myself also met with Fred Hunter from Fox 6 News this past Wednesday to film a segment for his show Absolutely Alabama. It will air probably before you read this (march 4th) but if you have internet service you can google up his show and im sure the segment will be available online.
It highlights the kid workshops we’ve been doing as well as mention’s the need for more wildlife management, basically the reason behind why traps and trapping are so critical to all wildlife species not just the one’s trappers target. Hopefully this segment will be well received and show trapping in a positive light. Next time you see Mike Seivering give him a pat on the back, as he was sick this last workshop but trudged ahead and made it through. A lot of you are not aware of all the schools, deer hunting events as well as other outdoor events Mike attends throughout the year setting up a booth and talking about trapping to the general public. We’re all lucky to have him in our state.
One last item id like to mention is don’t forget the SE NTA Regional convention is coming up in May in Tupelo, Ms. Advertisements about the event are in this magazine so be sure and get your hotel reservation’s early to be sure you have a room. Tupelo is always a great SE and im sure this one will be also. The SE NTA Leadership Conference will be held in Chattanooga, TN. In April, if you wish to attend contact me for details or read the general organizer’s report in your American trapper magazine for exact dates and location.
It will be at the Choo Choo hotel in downtown so you can’t miss it, just look for the train on top of the tallest building in downtown. Bring the family along also as the aquarium’s just a few blocks away are really something else to see. Lots of sights around the area also that are worth taking in if you have the time. Hope to see you at the upcoming events this spring and summer and if you have any questions or comments about the NTA I’m always just a phone call away.
